What is the Roving Radish?
The Howard County’s Roving Radish promotes healthy eating
habits through meal kits comprised of locally and regionally grown foods
straight from the farm to your table.
The meal kits are available to anyone who works, plays or lives in
Howard County and are offered at a discounted price to those in need.
Can anyone sign up?
As long as
you live, work or play in Howard County, you are eligible to participate. There
are no income limitations.
How do I order?
Ordering is done on our website and is as simple as ordering
any product online. First, you select
the desired week for delivery. Once you
have selected your week, choose from either the standard or subsidized price
meal kit, select your pick up location and add to your shopping cart. Once you have finished your shopping, select
your shopping cart and proceed to check out.
At checkout, you can either pay at the time of your order online (credit
card only) or at pick-up (cash or EBT only). First time customers will be asked
to create an account to speed up future purchases. There is also a short survey you will fill
out at check out that we use to better understand our customers.
Can I order more than
one meal kit?
Absolutely,
How can I pay for my
meal kit? When ordering your meal kit we accept
credit card payment (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover) online
at check out or cash or EBT at time of pick up.
We do not accept credit card at time of pick-up. If you have any trouble with forms of payment
give us a call and we will do our best to accommodate you.
How much does each meal kit cost?
Each meal kit will cost
$32.00 or $16.00 if you qualify for our subsidized price.
How do I know if I qualify for a subsidized meal kit?
If you or anyone living in
your household has participated in one of more of the programs listed below in
the past 12 months, you can purchase a meal kit for $12. We have received a
grant from the United Way of Central Maryland to help those who cannot afford
the full meal kit price. The mission of the Roving Radish is to make fresh and
affordable meal kits available to all Howard County residents.

(FSP) or SNAP
·
Women, Infants and Children (WIC)
·
Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA)
·
Medical Assistance – Medicaid or
Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP)
·
School breakfast or lunch program ·
Social Security Disability Income (SSDI). This is not the
same program as Social Security Income.
When you go to order online, you will be able to check a box
to indicate that you are eligible for a subsidized meal kit.
Do I need to
bring verification that I qualify for a subsidy?
No, this is done on the honor system. Currently we do not have the resources to
verify everyone’s paper work that qualify for the subsidized kits. However, we reserve the right to ask for verification
from any customer at any time.
What if I miss my pick up time?
If you miss your meal kit
pick up your kit will be donated to a local food bank. We make every effort to remind you of your
pick up time and will do everything we can to help you pick your meal up at the
right time and place.
How will my meal kit be packaged?
The food will be
refrigerated until you pick up. The ingredients will be provided to you in a
shopping bag, just as you would pick it up from the grocery store. It is your
responsibility to ensure that your meal kit returns to a refrigerated
environment within a reasonable amount of time.
What will each meal kit contain?
Each meal kit provides all of the
ingredients and instructions for two meals, for a family of four. The kit
includes meat or other protein, vegetables and/or fruit, as well as products
like pasta or rice. Most items will come already cut and chopped, so they are
ready to cook. The ingredients are
listed on the meal kits ingredients tab on the ordering page of the website.
Will I need to purchase additional food items to
complete the recipes?
Occasionally, it is
possible that you might need to purchase an ingredient (i.e. 1 egg, milk) but
we do our best to include everything. A
list of items you will need to have to prepare meals is listed on the
ingredients tab on the ordering page of website.
Will all the produce
and meats be from local farms?
Whenever
possible we include products from local farms.
We have listed the local farms that participate in our program on our
website. There are times we cannot buy
products locally. When that occurs we
buy from regional farms or other responsible vendors. We will always be transparent with our
customers and tell you where we purchased our products.
Will the ingredients in each food kit be organic?
No, although some products
will be organic we cannot guarantee that all will be. We do however purchase from farms and vendors
that are responsible and stand behind their products.
Can I make special dietary requests?
At this time we are not
able to accommodate special dietary requests.
What nutritional standards will be applied to the
recipes?
Each meal will be:
- No more than 750
calories - Less than 30% of Calories from Fat. - No more than 1050 mg. of sodium

Who is running the Roving Radish?
The
Roving Radish is run by the Howard County Government, in partnership with the
Horizon Foundation, the United Way, Howard County General and many other
businesses and organizations in our community.
Support from the community is always welcomed, and helps us reach more
